Congrats to all the Rock Drill Winners of 2014

There was a superb turn out for the revival of this iconic goldfields event on September 28th in Norseman.  Sunday morning Roberts Street was packed with cars and people as a crowd of about 500 people descended to the site of the Iconic Rock Drill event. Golly Pascoe had put in months of work getting the event set up with the help of other experienced gold field rock drillers Greg ‘Pecker’ Hewitt and Brian Parkyn. In the weeks leading up to this moment Graeme Parkyn and Jay Maraki had dedicated their time to set up equipment, help Golly and prepare the site. Central Norseman Gold previous mine manger Rob Walker and  newly appointed manager Alan Sylvester organised a display of their underground mining machinery which added an impressive back drop for the competition.

When all the names of Rock Drill participants were drawn Brian Parkyn set up the boards and with the help of Kiwi Duckworth certificates were handed out to all those who had helped to make the Gold Fever Rock Drill event happen, whose time and effort were greatly appreciated by the committee.

So it began, after an 18 year break the Norseman Gold Fever Festival Rock Drilling kicked off. With 38 entries in the singles, 20 doubles teams and 12 teams in the Jack n Jill the crowd weren’t disappointed with a full day of adrenaline filled entertainment, the level of competition was of a very high standard and it was excellent to see drillers from all over the goldfields taking part! No goldfield rock drill would be complete without Rock Drill officiator Julian Grill here to judge and compare. As the sun basques down on the events through out the day the competition got even more heated as the finals were played out in the evening. Paul Maher title holder of Rock Drill Australasian Champion was matched with Norseman local Graeme Parkyn in the singles final. Graeme aged 38,a motocross champion, is the son of previous rock drill champion Brian Parkyn and a first time participant to the competition, no mean feat to be up against Maher, Graeme took the title with ease and was celebrated by an overjoyed crowd. Norseman locals are very proud of you Graeme creating a family legacy and keeping the title in the town!

Congrats and well done to all the Rock drill participants,  finalists & winners, it really was a fabulous day in Norseman.
